I think it's logical - before calling animal ''ethnicity'', we should learn about a place where they were found first of all and by whom . They are called Van cats and it means that now, we need to talk about the city of Van, about who built it and who lived there (until 1915).
Van (Armenian: Վան), is a city in eastern Turkey's (TODAY) Van Province, and is located on the eastern shore of Lake Van. It is the cultural center of the area's Kurdish majority (TODAY).
